The recording for the November 13, 2025, Paraquat information session is now available to watch below.
It was hosted by our CEO, Olivia Nassaris. We heard from Dr David Blacker, author of My FIGHT with PD: A Neurologist with Parkinson's Disease, about the dangers of paraquat and alternative farming practices. Craig Allsop, from SHINE lawyers, explained Australia's class action suit and how you can get involved as a person living with Parkinson's or a loved one of someone deceased who was exposed to paraquat.
Did you know?
Paraquat is a toxic herbicide that has been widely used in agriculture for decades. Research has linked paraquat exposure to an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s. Despite these dangers, paraquat is still permitted in some settings, and many Australians may have been exposed without even realising it.
Exposure to paraquat can occur through:
Working on farms or in agricultural industries
Living near areas where paraquat was sprayed (e.g. school ovals, golf courses, farming areas within 500m)
Handling contaminated clothing or equipment
Drinking water or eating food grown in treated soil.
Even small amounts of exposure over time may have serious health consequences. That’s why Parkinson’s Australia is leading the Ban Paraquat Campaign, to eliminate repeat exposures to people already living with Parkinson's and to protect current and future generations from this preventable risk.
